The Highway

The Highway
By: Maeve Connolly 812
As I headed home down the desolate highway, I remembered everything that had happened that day. Woke up, went to school, had lunch, left school. Uneventful, just like all the other days of my life. Everything was boring, everything was always the same. On the outside, I was a level headed, mature, smart girl with grades that would get me into a decent college. But on the inside I longed for something more. For years I had hated the way I lived my life, and it was practically eating me from the inside out. I needed adventure, and I needed it now. I tore off my backpack and left it in the middle of the empty road. I ran down the white line that separated the two car lanes. And finally when I was so out of breathe that I thought my lungs might burst, I came to a stop. I must have run for miles, and for once I didn’t care where my backpack had landed or weather my parents were looking for me. It just didn’t feel right to think about these things when I felt so alive. So I stood right there in that exact spot and I still can’t remember how long I was there for, but by the time it happened, it was dark. I also remember that no cars had come down the road until it happened. Sadly I saw it just as I was leaving. Two lights, then a second later I saw the wheels and heard the growl of the engine. Every time I look back upon this moment, I remember what I felt in those few seconds. At first I was paralyzed with fear, so much so that I couldn’t move any part of my body, not even to scream, like in one of those horrible nightmares when a monster is chasing you, but your legs don’t seem to work. But the next feeling scared me the most, it was even disturbing. I wanted the car to hit me; I wanted to feel something, even if it was pain. I wasn’t suicidal or anything, I didn’t want my life to end, I just didn’t want to feel trapped. I closed my eyes and spread out my arms. Finally as I took one last breath, something hit me, but from the other direction. I thrashed and screamed as I landed in the cold wet mud on the side of the highway.
“What were you thinking?!” I yelled as I looked to see what had saved me.
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that question?” the stranger said
I squinted in the dark to try to make out his face, he had green eyes that shimmered in the night and black hair too perfectly shaped to be real. He wore a leather jacket and combat boots; he looked like one of those cliché vampires in romance novels. And he looked so smug, like he knew he was better than me.
“Who are you? And why are you here?” I shouted as I shoved him as hard as I could.
“Well that’s some way to thank the man who saved you from dying.”
So I took off down the muddy trail next to the highway. I didn’t stop or look back, even when I heard him call after me, wanting to know if I would jump in front of a car again.
It was 2 in the morning when I got home, I hadn’t realized how far I ran until I came to my sense and cursed at myself for losing my backpack with my phone and all my textbooks. When I walked in the front door, my parents came rushing at me yelling and screaming about how they were worried sick and that they even called the police, just like I knew they would. After an hour of this I finally got to bed, but not once did I stop thinking about the man who had rescued me.
The next day I stayed home from school, my parents had left for work so I had the house all to myself, couldn’t go anywhere because I was grounded so I sat around doing nothing. Until at 2:30 there was a knock at my door. I opened it, expecting my friends to be there, wondering why I wasn’t at school. Instead, to my surprised I found myself staring into the green eyes of the guy from the night before.
As soon as I saw who was at the door my first reflex was to slam the door and run upstairs but, of course his hand stopped the door from closing all the way and he just walked right on in.
“What are you doing, get out of my house!” I said impatiently
“Well since you never actually thanked me for saving your life, I thought I would come to your house and see if you tried to jump in front of any more cars.”  He said with all the confidence in the world.
“Okay first of all, I didn’t need your help, and second you can’t just come into my house without my consent, how do I know you’re not going to rob me? You better leave now before I call the police!” The second after those words came out of my mouth, I felt stupid. Isn’t this what I wanted, some excitement? And now I was kicking it right out the door, what was wrong with me?
“Fine you can stay, but I need to know everything, why you were out in the middle of nowhere at 12 at night, where you came from, who you are and so on.”
“Okay, but you should sit down, this might take a while.”
So I sat down as he explained everything to me, his name was Alaric. I told him mine was Lindsey. Then he explained that he had just moved to town and his parents had died when he was two, in a tragic car accident. He lived here with his uncle in the house on the edge of town, it was the biggest amount of land in the whole town I had just stumbled upon its border when I went for my little run, he was there are 12 at night because he had come back from a party. That explained who he was and a lot of his past but it didn’t explain why he was lying.
I wasn’t stupid, every single vampire story on Earth is exactly like the one he just told, they live in a huge house with almost no one in it, they’re parents are dead, and they always go out at night. The whole time he told the story, I sat there laughing in my head, and at some points I actually had to try hard to keep the smile off my face.
“Well that was an interesting story.” I said
“Yeah, but do you want to hear the best part?” he said mischievously
“Sure, whatever.”
He came close to me, so close that when he answered, I could fell his breath on my ear.
“I’m a vampire”.
A slow smile spread across my face and I pulled away from him. I was scared, my heart was pounding. But not because I thought he was a vampire, but because he was probably a lunatic, who escaped from the mental hospital thinking he was a vampire. He would probably hurt me or do something weird, you never know with the crazies. I stepped back slowly until I was pressed against the living room wall; I kept the smile on my face as I said,
“Uh, I think you-you should go now, my parents will be home any minute.”
“Oh, is that so, well I’ll have to make it quick, wont I?” he said as he walked toward me. He opened his mouth and I saw one longer sharper tooth on each side of his mouth.
I laughed as he encroached. His mouth went wider and wider until he was on top of me and I could hear myself screaming in the distance.
I awoke with a gasp, panting. There was a fast paced beep in the background. I looked around suddenly and saw the inside of a hospital room. I closed my eyes and thanked God for letting me survive that weird and horrible encounter with that crazy vampire.
A nurse, and my mother and father rushed into the room to find me awake and sitting up in the bed.
“Oh my goodness, I was so worried!” my mother exclaimed joyfully as she pulled me into a tight embrace.
“What were you thinking, out there all alone on a school night in the middle of nowhere?” My father cried.
I was extremely confused. “Wait, what are you guys talking about?”
“You were in a car accident 3 weeks ago and in a coma ever since! We weren’t sure if you were going to make it!’ My mother said with relief in her voice.
“But I was home yesterday, and that vampire bit me.” I said even more confused than before.
“Oh, you had a Coma dream; it’s a very common side effect.” The nurse said.
I sighed; glad to know that vampires were just something my coma brain had come up with. I regretted my need for adventure; I had had more of that the past few weeks than I needed in a whole year. I took it as a sign that my life was perfectly fine without all the excitement that some people had.

Romeo and Juliet Literary Essay (Revised)

Maeve Connolly 812

Thesis: Tybalt, Lord Capulet and Lady Capulet all play an important role in the tragedy, their stubbornness and desire to do things for their own personal gain, pushes Juliet into the arms of death.
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is the story of two lovers from feuding families who struggle to be together and end up dying in the process. In the book, Juliet’s parents and her kinsman, Tybalt are extremely stubborn. Her parents want to marry her off to a well known and respected man, so their family will look good, and Tybalt won’t stop at anything to get rid of Romeo, out of his own spite. All three of these people seem to be blinded by what they want, and in the end their blindness results in the death of Romeo and Juliet.
Tybalt despises the Montagues, more than anyone in the Capulet house, and constantly complains and picks fights with them. Tybalt is incredibly stubborn and doesn't listen to anyone, and eventually his personality gets him killed. In Act 1 Scene 5, at the Capulet party, Tybalt sees Romeo trespassing, he threatens to go pick a fight, but Lord Capulet suggests otherwisie, and Tybalt refuses.                                                                                                                                      “Lord Capulet- Content thee gentle coz, let him alone/ and say truth, Verona brags of him/ To be a virtuous and well governed youth.... therefore take no note of him it is my will the which thou respect/ Show a fair presence and put off theses frowns./ He shall be endured!”                                                                                                                      "Tybalt- It fits when such a villain is a guest/ I’ll not endure him.” (1.5. 64-76)                  This quote shows how Tybalt won’t even listen to the people in his own house, he does things that he thinks are right, or things that will benefit just him, not the whole family. Like killing Mercutio and even challenging the Montagues on the street, doing these things  will make the Capulet family look bad, they could even be punished by the Prince. But he does it anyway for his own reason’s. Later in the book, after Tybalt kills Mercutio, Romeo kills Tybalt, he was Romeo’s best friend and he uses his grief to take revenge. Tybalt is the most stubborn character in the book and is even portrayed as evil in both movies, his personality in many ways contributes greatly to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
Lady Capulet’s only living child is Juliet, but she doesn’t seem to pay attention to her the way a mother should when she is her only surviving offspring. The Nurse was more like a mother to Juliet; she even breast-fed her as a child. In some way’s Lady Capulet is just like her husband.  She also seems to hand her problems with Juliet over to Lord Capulet to deal with. In Act 3 Scene 5 Lady Capulet try’s to encourage Juliet to marry Paris and then tells Lord Capulet how foolish it is not to take his generous offer.                                                                                  “Lady Capulet- …Next Thursday morn/ the gallant, young, and noble gentleman/ The County Paris, at Saint Peter’s Church/ Shall happily make thee there a joyful bride.                           Juliet- …He shall not make me there a joyful bride/ I pray you; tell my lord and father, madam/ I will not marry yet.                                                                                                                         Lady Capulet- Here come’s your father. Tell him so yourself/ and see how he will take it at your hands!... (To Lord Capulet) Ay, sir, but she will none, she gives you thanks/ I would the fool were married to her grave.” (3.5. 112-125, 139-140)                                                                             Lady Capulet doesn’t really know her daughter, in fact Juliet doesn’t even trust her, she has more faith in the nurse than her own mother. Then when the nurse suggests that marrying Paris is the best idea and most reasonable choice, Juliet has no one in the Capulet house. Her distance from her mother and the rest of her family probably made Juliet’s decision to drink the potion and appear dead much easier. There was no one she really was close to, except the nurse who had agreed with her mother on the idea of marrying Paris. Now isolated and alone, Juliet jumps at the first chance she gets to be with Romeo.
Lord Capulet wants the same thing for Juliet that Lady Capulet does, for her to be married to Paris, an intelligent, well known man from a noble and wealthy family. He seems to only consider what will make the family look the best, and not what Juliet actually wants. He is as stubborn as Tybalt in some ways. And these events take place in just a few days, his desire to have her married so quickly pushes her to create a plan to be with Romeo in a few short hours which goes horribly awry. In Act 3 Scene 5, Lord Capulet is furious at Juliet for not agreeing to marry Paris, he even threatens to throw her out into the streets is she doesn’t comply.                                                                                                       Lord Capulet- .....To go with Paris to Saint Peter’s Church/ or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither/ Out, you green sickness, carrion! Out, you baggage!/ You tallow face!/ ... Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch!/ I tell thee what: get thee to church o' Thursday,/Or never after look me in the face/… But now I see this one is one too much/ and that we have a curse in having her/ Out on her hilding!” (3.5. 154-157, 160-168)                      Lord Capulet evidently doesn’t see things from Juliet’s point of view, Paris is a man she hardly knows, and now is just learning she’s being forced to marry him the next day. He is blinded by his anger and is so stubborn; he doesn’t even try to reason with Juliet.  His outburst probably showed Juliet that she has no say in the matter, and so, she went to extreme measures to be with her love, Romeo.
In the end, the feud between the Capulet’s and the Montague’s killed four people, and injured everyone grieving the dead. All of the characters played a special role in the death, but Juliet’s family played one of the bigger roles by pushing her to marry Paris and being incredibly stubborn. They were selfish in a way, and only went after what they wanted. If Romeo and Juliet wasn’t a tragedy, these characters would have been selfless and would know when to give up. Lord and Lady Capulet would have supported and respected Juliet’s decisions and maybe nobody would have died.

Romeo and Juliet Literary Essay (draft)

Tybalt despises the Montague's even more than Lord Capulet, and constantly complains and picks fights with the Montague’s. Tybalt is incredibly stubborn and doesn't listen to anyone, and eventually his personality kills him. In Act 1 Scene 5, at the Capulet party, Tybalt see’s Romeo trespassing, he threatens to go pick a fight, but Lord Capulet suggests otherwise, and Tybalt refuses. “Lord Capulet- Content thee gentle coz, let him alone.... and say truth, Verona brags of him, to be a virtuous and well governed youth.... therefore take no note of him it is my will the which thou respect. Show a fair presence and put off theses frowns. Tybalt- It fits when such a villain is a guest, I’ll not endure him. Lord Capulet- He shall be endured!” Thus quote shows how Tybalt won’t even listen to the people on his own side, he does things that he thinks are right, or things that will benefit just him, not the whole family. Later in the book, Tybalt picks a fight with Mercutio and kills him; Romeo was Mercutio’s best friend, so out of sadness and despair Romeo kills Tybalt in a sword fight. He is the most stubborn character in the book and is even portrayed as evil in the movie, his personality in many ways contributes greatly to the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.

Lady Capulet’s only living child is Juliet, but she doesn’t seem to pay attention to her the way a mother should when she is her only surviving descendant. The Nurse was more like a mother to Juliet, she even breast-feed her as a child. In some way’s Lady Capulet is just like her husband. She also seems to hand her problem’s with Juliet over to Lord Caplet to deal with. In Act 3 Scene 5 Lady Capulet try’s to encourage Juliet to marry Paris and then tells Lord Capulet how foolish it is not to take his generous offer. “Lady Capulet- Marry, my child, early next Thursday morn, the gallant, young, and noble gentleman, The County Paris, at Saint Peter’s Church, Shall happily make thee there a joyful bride. Juliet- Now, by Saint Peter’s Church and Peter too, He shall not make me there a joyful bride. I wonder at this haste, that I must wed ere he, that should be husband, comes to woo. I pray you; tell my lord and father, madam, I will not marry yet. And when I do, I swear it shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, Rather than Paris. These are news indeed! Lady Capulet- Here come’s your father. Tell him so yourself, and see how he will take it at your hands!... Lady Capulet- (to Lord Capulet) Ay, sir, but she will none, she gives you thanks. I would the fool were married to her grave.” Lady Capulet doesn’t really know her daughter, in fact Juliet doesn’t even trust her, she has more faith in the nurse than her own mother. Disobedient wretch! I tell thee what: get thee to church o' Thursday, Or never after look me in the face. Speak not. Reply not. Do not answer me. My fingers itch.—Wife, we scarce thought us blest That God had lent us but this only child, But now I see this one is one too much And that we have a curse in having her. Out on her, hilding!” Lord Capulet evidently doesn’t see things from Juliet’s point of view, Paris is a man she has hardly meet and know is just learning she’s being forced to marry him the next day. Lady Capulet- Here comes your father. Tell him so yourself, And see how he will take it at your hands.

Conclusion:
Tybalt, Lady Capulet and Lord Capulet all contribute in their own way to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.

Spoiled #2 (extra credit)

In the book Spoiled by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, ever since Molly has come to town, Brooke's dad, Brick Berlin, has been neglecting her severely. He would rather spend all his free time with Molly. Nothing good can come of it, and Brooke is a ticking time bomb, she'll blow up in both of their faces if Molly keeps being picked over her. And nothings better at school, Brooke is no longer the most popular girl, everyone prefers Molly. I think Brick should give his daughters equal attention if he wants them to get along and be happy with each other, but Brooke also has to get used to her new life and stop being so mean to her new family member.

As soon as Molly got to California, she began to outshine Brooke in everything, even the tabloids forgot who she was. And of course she was pissed, Brooke used to be the apple of her fathers eye and was the main focus of everyone at school, now she has to share the limelight with her "sister". Even the seniors are fascinated by her, Molly was featured in an issue of Hey. one of the most read tabloids, they called her clothes new and improved. Brooke was watching the whole thing from the other side of the room, the only time they had talked about her since Molly came was to point out how unfriendly and mean spirited she seemed at Molly's debut party, or what used to be Brooke's birthday. Even though this might be a bit unfair, she needs to get used to the fact that it's not all about her.

The other person Brooke is mad at is her father. Brick Berlin is a movie star and hardly has time for his children, it's not uncommoner for him to jet off to some unknown island to film a new million dollar movie. So of course he hardly has time for Brooke, but she's happy with the schedule because at least they have some time together. Now that Molly is here Brooke has no time with her dad. First he made her 16th birthday party all about Molly, nobody payed any attention to her. Then her flew to Miami to work on a new movie. But as soon as he came back, he announced they were they were going out for dinner, without Brooke. For some "father daughter bonding time." I think Brick is being extremely unfair to his first daughter, and it seems like he favors Molly more than he does Brooke, he should distribute his time equally so that he doesn't hurt the father daughter relationship, and even Brooke's and Molly's tolerance for each other.

In conclusion I think Brooke needs to get used to not getting everything she wants, but also should get more attention from her father who has been neglecting her, ever since her new sister, Molly came to town.

Spoiled

In the book Spoiled by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, Molly moved from her home in Indiana, to her rich and famous dads house in L.A. Now Molly needs to deal with her half sister, Brooke, and Brooke is nice to Molly around their dad but is nasty and mean when nobodies watching. But Brooke has an enemy, Shelby Kendall. Her father runs Hey. the most popular tabloid in L.A.And since Brooke's father is a movie superstar, and Shelby's father prints rumors and gossip (mostly about him) in the magazine, the two girls are natural enemies. At school Molly is having trouble fitting in, but Shelby is being unusually nice to her. I don't think that Shelby is being sincere, she might just being nice to hurt Brooke, even though she might deserve it, Molly doesn't need to be pulled into their fight.

On the first day of school, nobody talks to her. Brooke ignores her and gossips about her with her own friends. On the loudspeaker Shelby describes Molly's situation and offers help to anyone who's in the same place. The next week, when Molly is told she has to design the costumes for the play Brooke has been working on for the whole summer, she blows up in Molly's face and of coarse Shelby is there, watching the whole thing, ready to clean up the mess, and when Molly leaves, she swoops in to give the helpless girl her business card. There is a good chance Shelby is just using her to get information about Brick Berlin (the father movie star) so that she can print her own story in Hey. and impress her dad.

There is also another reason Shelby might just be using Molly, it makes Brooke furious. The day Molly was assigned the costume designing, Shelby offered her the extra latte she had just got. All the while Brooke is starting at them talking, fuming. Even though She hates the new girl for invading her space, sharing a room and "stealing" her father, Brooke would never want Molly to be friends with her mortal enemy. Together they could find out embarrassing stuff about her and publish it Hey. I think that this was Shelby's plan all along. She would never be friends with someone like Molly on purpose, there is always an ulterior motive.

In conclusion I think that Molly should be careful and not trust anyone who seems to think of nothing but getting ahead in life, like Shelby.

Romeo and Juliet

In the book Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Tybalt, the kinsman to the Capulet's, hated the Montague's it seems even more than Capulet did. At the Capulet party he wants Romeo gone more than anyone else, in his eye's the Montague's are intolerable. He despises them so much he would would kill.

In Act 1 Scene 1, a riot breaks out on the street and as soon as Tybalt enters, he draws his sword, and threatens to kill Benvolio, and after he wants to negotiate peace, Tybalt said he hated the word peace like he hates hell and accused Benvolio of being a coward. Even in this first scene Tybalt asserts himself as someone who would happily fight to the death and is repulsed with the idea of peace with the Montague's.

In Act 1 Scene 5, there is a party organized by the Capulet's. Romeo and his friends sneak in, and then Romeo see's Juliet for the first time. All the while Tybalt is watching, when he first see's a Montague at a Capulet party Tybalt orders the servant to get his sword, prepared to kill him. Capulet stops his and explains to Tybalt that Romeo is a dignified young man with an excellent reputation in Verona, and that there is no reason to cause a fuss at the feast. But Tybalt wont tolerate him, and Capulet gets frustrated and says that his stubbornness and stupidity will come back to haunt him. This shows that Tybalt will hate Romeo even when he has done nothing wrong, and won't even listen to Capulet when it comes to the Montague's.

In Act 3 Scene 1, Tybalt and Mercutio, the prince's kinsman and Romeo's friend, get into a argument, which turns into a sword fight, which results in Mercutio's death. Tybalt showed no remorse and flees the scene after the battle. Romeo is now enraged, but the foolish Tybalt comes back again. Now Romeo and Tybalt start to fight, Tybalt is soon killed. In both battles he instigated the fight. Firstly Tybalt and his friends approach Mercutio, practically looking for a fight, and then again he comes back to the place where he killed Romeo's friend. It wasn't a smart move for him to face the people who's friend he had killed just minutes after the death.

Even before I read Act 3 Scene 1, I could tell that Tybalt was going to get into some kind of trouble. He was always provoking people, and instigating precarious situations. His uncle even called him a foolish boy, and that his stupidity would come back to haunt him. In his own way I think Tybalt got what he deserved.
